Back to School

Mathias started preschool last Friday {25th January 2013} and as expected he loved it. He loved it so much he couldn't wait for me to leave him there! I'm so glad he loves it, I know he definitely needs it. I did have a funny feeling that day without him though, I have been counting down the years and months that he would finally start school, but on his first day at preschool I missed his laughter. He is such a energetic and funny kids who can't keep still and he drives me nuts! but I wouldn't change him one bit, and when he does start school, five days a week next year, I will miss him.

Taylah-benet started school on Wednesday {30th January 2013} We changed schools this year to one that is much closer. I was/am very nervous about it, but I know it was necessary. She surprises me with how fast she is growing up. She is so excited to be at her new school, she got a little nervous when we first got there, but as soon as we meet with the Principal and the teacher who would be taking her, she went straight on in. A few days before she started she was asking me about the girls from her old school, I said 'they wont be at your new school, you'll make new friends' and she replied 'I will miss them, but I will keep them in my heart' She is such a sweet caring little girl and she can be so stubborn, I am still nervous, but I know she will be fine.

It's finished!

Yesterday I actually sat down to finish the hand sewing on Carters cot quilt. I had made it a goal to make each of my babies a cot quilt and their blessing outfits which to date I have succeeded so far. Although with each child that comes, it is taking me longer and longer to complete these projects.

Taylah-benet's blessing dress and cot quilt were made before she was even born. Mathias, I think was around six months when I finished his quilt, and Carter, well he's nearly one!

BUT that being said, I'm really happy that I've been able to complete it. My next project is to knit a hooded jumper for Mathias for winter (we'll see how that goes! I might be asking my Nana to complete it for me)

My next quilting project is one for Taylah-benet's eighth birthday. It's still two years away, but with my record I'll be lucky if I get it finished in time!

Note to self

Note to self: don't post when your upset!

Ok, note taken.

School holidays is starting to wrap up and I think I've been managing pretty well. I've taken the kids to see 'Raise of the Guardians' which is pretty awesome, and last weekend we took them to see 'Wreck it Ralph' which is also awesome and has started us playing the game.

We haven't really done much else, just staying home & a couple visits to the park/playground.

Kerry is on his 4th year of his apprenticeship, last year was his final year of study and he passed all his exams which I was super happy about {I have such a clever husband} so this year is just work and sitting a final exam mid way through the year.

I love that he has found a trade that he really enjoys and is rather good at. Over the years I have learnt the art of 'pretending to be interested' when he starts talking about what he's been doing at school and work, and sometimes I am, but it's kind of really difficulty when I don't understand a lick of what he's telling me! I mean really, how many people who are not electricians actually know about power and electricity!? I flick the switch and the light turns on is about the extent of my knowledge in that department!

He wants to study High Voltage next and I really hope he gets into it.

This year we have a goal of fixing every little thing in our apartment and hopefully seriously look at selling next year and buying a house depending on Kerry's work.

I can't wait to have more space, but at the same time, I love the closeness our tiny place gives us.

Sydney seems to be busting out the heat, we've had two {yes TWO!} 45degree days within the last two weeks. We have moved our bed to the lounge indefinitely, as I find it way to difficult to sleep when it's hot, and our room gets the hottest as its in the opposite direction to the flow of our air conditioning unit. It's like one big long sleep over in our lounge, I love it!

Mathias starts preschool next Friday which I am really looking forward to. I can't wait to see him focus some of his never ending energy into something and I think preschool will do that for him. I think he's pretty excited, and although he is my most challenging and I am really looking forward to when he starts school 5days a week next year, I though I need to look at it differently. This is the last year I'll have him at home so I want to make the most of it.

Updates

Ok a little update on the happs in my house hold.

Carter Mason Cole is 11months now, he has 10 teeth, one more coming through. He is not walking yet, but he is crawling all over the place, and he's turned from baby to the human baby vaccume cleaner! he put's everything that he finds on the ground, into his mouth now. He is still so different from Taylah-benet and Mathias, he is really difficult to get to bed at night time and he is a really light sleeper so he wakes easily during the night. He prefers the comforts he knows, people he knows and places. He loves to close to us. When he wakes in the night he settles if I hold him close, or bring him to my bed to sleep next to me.

He is truly perfect, and I don't mind it so much that he wants to stay close. I want to keep him close, I love having him as my baby.

Mathias is FINALLY using the toilet!!! Can you tell I'm excited about that one!? I don't know how or why it happened but while Kerry was off from work we decided to put under wear on him and he just started going to the toilet, go figure! I have heard that you should wait until their ready, Taylah-benet was out of day time nappies when she turned three, so I thought that Mathias would just be the same. How wrong was I! Anyhow, he starts pre school at the end of this month, one day a week which I think will be really great for him.

He went to primary for the first time on Sunday and he was so excited! I checked on him half way through, but he was fine. So now I have no kids in nursery until Carter is old enough {which I am not looking forward to}

Taylah-benet seems to have developed quite a stubborn streak, I'm all for encouraging my kids individuality as much as the next mother, but occasionally I will buy an outfit or pieces of clothing for her and lately she'll have a total melt down if she doesn't like the clothes I have pick out for her! I mean, I knew I would get this at some point I remember doing it myself, pink and red may have clashed back when I was a kids but everyone wears them together now! I was totally on to something! I just didn't think this would start for a few more years.

I am learning to pick my battles with my 6 year old daughter.

Lessons Learnt

From being a 'kindy' mum.

1. Good foot support was important to me when preparing to send Taylah to school. It does cost more, but I felt justified in the peace of mind, knowing that the shoes that her still growing feet are wearing 5 days of the week all year round, are giving her the proper support she needs and is also important in regards to posture and a whole bunch of other things.

2. This one was a tough one. Don't spend too much on a lunch box! last Christmas 'Santa'  brought Taylah and Mathias Dwell Studio insulated lunch bags that cost $50 each. Taylah lost hers before the end of term one, I've brought her at least five lunch boxes this year and I've lost count of the times she forgot it in the playground so we would have to go back into school to get it. From now on I'm trying not to spend more that $10 on a lunch box!

3. School uniforms cost a bucket load! Lucky for me, I received hand-me-downs from my sisters kids for Taylah-benet. if I had brought all the uniforms she required it would have added up to a good $300-$500. I did buy things through out the year, but it was a life saver to have seconds, and she lost or stained almost everything anyway! And, it really doesn't matter that much anyways. I would love to send her to school in all new gears, but at the end of the day, it didn't matter one single bit.

4. Ask questions. I'm not very good with this one, but I am trying to improve. I am trusting the people at this school with my most precious treasure on this earth and it is my job to make sure they are looking out for her in every way. They are there to teach her, it is important to know what and how they are doing this and how Taylah is responding. Is she exceeding or lacking. Is she applying herself or is she not participating enough. In the playground is she making friends, who is she playing with, is she being kind and respectful to others.

5. Be prepared for anything. I think it was in the first term Taylah had learnt the 'F' word, somewhere in the year she got bullied a little, she was placed on detention twice for biting - twice. All these thing have been learning experiences, learning to let her go {just a little!} learning that no matter how much 'good' I might be teaching her at home, she is going to make mistakes, she is not going to be a perfect student and she just a human kid. Things happen and I need to learn when to act, what I can do to help and when to step back.

As her mother, learning to step back a little as she takes in this little piece of the world we live in has been an eye opener. It is hard, and in the back of my mind I felt a comparison to our relationship with Heavenly Father. How he watches us live in this world, he watches us making our mistakes and the paths we choose to follow and he can't change our choice. He can't 'make' us choose the right.

I know it's just kindy and I have a long long way to go. But, I think I can do it. well, lets hope so!!

A holiday in Cowra

At the beginning of November the Sullivans purchased their first home all the way out in Cowra NSW. On Saturday {29th Dec 2012} we made the 3 and a half hour drive there {which turned out to be about a 5 hour drive with our three kids!} to visit.

We arrived Saturday afternoon at about 3pm. They have brought a beautiful big 5 bedroom home with a rumpus room turned into a 6th bedroom. It's old country charm is relaxing and inviting with an odd touch up to do here and there, there really isn't anything to fault it on. It is on a 3/4 acre block of land so there is plenty of room for the kids outside and more!

Sunday we attended the tiny branch which is just across the road! With all the extra family we packed the little house turned into a chapel.

On Monday, New Year's Eve, I followed Caroline in my car as she showed me the town. They have one big store which is Target {which is still small in comparison to our Sydney stores} there is also a Woolworths, Coles and ALDI along with a lot of little shops.

After lunch we drove a little out of town to a swimming spot on the river. I'm not really one for swimming in any body of water that is not a swimming pool, but I love that although I am cautious and slightly paranoid about swimming in any sort of natural water spots, Kerry is the complete opposite. He dives straight in, he has confidence and faith in so much. I often think that we make up for each other's lacking here, where Kerry is laid back and relaxed, I am slightly wound up and paranoid. Sometimes I like this, in this instants anyway, He encourages me to jump in and try things that I would never have.

That evening we packed up a BBQ dinner and went to the local pools just up the road and stayed there until it closed at 8pm. After that we headed up to the lookout in the Center of town where the kids spotted a wild kangaroo and lit sparklers.

We watched the 9pm fireworks on tv then I was so tired I put my kids to bed then went to bed myself.

Tuesday we packed into the car a little earlier and drove about 20mins out of town to the dam where the kids swam, we ate lunch and swam some more.

We went back to the pools that evening with our dinner. It is such a nice pool, they only have one pool and a toddlers pool, but they were really really nice and hardly many people.

Wednesday we slowly packed up our car and came home.

It is so beautiful in Cowra and although I will miss my Sullivan family I am so happy for them and I can't wait to go back for plenty more visits.
